ined largely steady this week, sources told Metal Bulletin on Wednesday June 28.
Metal Bulletin’s price assessment for commodity-grade, category-2 H-beam (200x200mm) made in Northern Europe narrowed downward by €5 ($6) per tonne to €480-500 ($540-562) per tonne delivered on June 28.
This compared with €480-505 ($540-568) per tonne delivered last week, when market participants said prices had probably reached their lowest point.
“Over the past few months, scrap prices have dropped but the beams price did not drop very much, so mills have been earning some money,” a trader in Northern Europe said.
“I think there is room to get prices down further but only if demand at mills is stable or weakens a little,” he said, adding that lead times remain short – around 2-4 weeks.
German steel mills settled their monthly contracts for ferrous scrap purchases at prices down by €10-20 ($11-22) per tonne in June, sources told Metal Bulletin this week.
Southern European beams prices stayed at €505-525 ($568-590) per tonne delivered on Wednesday, in a quiet market.
Import offers around €475-480 ($534-540) per tonne cfr from Iran and Turkey were reported in Spain but buying activity remains low.
