Demand for Poland’s wire rod strengthened in early July on expectations of prices increase and limited imports.
Polish mills have held their offer prices stable in July at around PLN 1,980/t (EUR 468/t CPT, EUR 1 = PLN 4.23), but for the second-half of the month producers plan hikes of some EUR 10‑۲۰/t. “We are fully booked for July, so we already try to push through some hikes,” a local mill has told Metal Expert. Customers’ buying activity has picked up on the expected increase.
“We try to replenish stocks now, as mills are determined to increase prices. Besides, there are limited quantities in the market now due to reduced imports,” a Polish trader has told Metal Expert.
In addition, one of the major domestic suppliers, ArcelorMittal Sosnowiec, plans outage from August 21 till September 24.
Import offers are coming at the levels equal to those of the previous month, EUR 450‑۴۶۰/t CPT from Moldova and EUR 450/t CPT from Russia.
Deals have been heard with a discount of around EUR 10/t. Italian suppliers have been offering wire rod to Poland at EUR 450/t CPT.
Market participants expect domestic prices to go up in end-July and early August, with import offers to follow.
