Demand for steel rebar in Poland continued to be good in the week to Friday July 31, supporting the low end of the range, although the high end slipped sources told Fastmarkets

Poland’s rebar market was still active in the last week of July, supported by vigorous demand from the construction industry.
The country’s major rebar producers announced higher prices last week, and managed to fix an increase in deals compared with levels in mid-July, sources said.
In the secondary market, steel rebar was heard traded at 1,920-1,940 zloty per tonne delivered, up from 1,840-1,820 zloty per tonne last week, sources said.
Fastmarkets’ weekly price assessment for steel rebar in Poland was 1,840-1,950 zloty ($492-521) per tonne on Friday, narrowing from 1,840-1,970 zloty last week.
The assessment is based on deals and offers heard in the market.
“Generally the price range is about 1,840-1,950 zloty per tonne [exw], but there can be about 20-30 zloty per tonne discounts for bigger volumes/old customers,” one trader said.

    Imports

Conversely, overseas rebar suppliers were not active in Poland. The latest rebar offers from Moldova were heard at €۴۳۰ ($۵۰۷) per tonne cpt (about €۴۰۵ per tonne dap border) to Polish buyers, which was not considered workable.
Moldova’s quarterly rebar import quota has been depleting slowly. As of July 30, Moldova had delivered just 5,354 tonnes of rebar to the European Union, or 28.8% of its 18,527-tonne allocation for the period from July 1 to September 30, 2020.
Russia’s major rebar producer, NLMK, reportedly had very minor exports tonnages and its price was also not attractive for the Polish market.
“NLMK offered us 500 tonnes this time and the price was about €۴۲۰ per tonne cpt. They focus on domestic market now, and after that flood in Ural, they are short of tonnages,” one source said, referring to NLMK’s decision to suspend rolling operations on July 20 as a result of the adverse weather conditions.
As of July 20, Russian producers had used 75.2% (46,358 tonnes) of the 61,630-tonne import allocation for the EU for the period from July 1 to September 30, 2020.
Italian suppliers were yet to announce August prices. The most recent price from an Italian mill to Poland was €۴۲۰ per tonne cpt, and that level failed to attract any interest. But given good demand for rebar in the domestic Italian market and stable scrap prices, Italian producers are unlikely to cut prices.

    Wire rod

Domestic prices in Poland for drawing-quality wire rod (s235jr, 6-12mm) were heard at 1,900-1,980 zloty per tonne delivered, which was the same as last week, sources said.
Demand was reported to be moderate with drawing companies working at about 80-90% capacity, sources said.
At the same, buyers were mostly doing “back to back” business and preferred to keep their stocks low.
“No one is brave enough to build stocks,” a mill source said.
Sources expect prices to rollover in August.
“For August, prices should be stable. On the one hand there will be stoppages at Poland’s mills but on the other hand I am not sure about real demand. The real state of the economy will be seen in autumn,” one distributor said.
Wire rod offers from CIS suppliers to Poland were broadly stable over the week.
A Ukrainian mill was offering wire rod for August rolling to Poland at €۳۹۰ per tonne dap border (around €۴۱۵ per tonne delivered).
As of July 30, Ukraine’s 97,608-tonne wire rod import quota for the EU for the third quarter was only 15.8% filled (15,437 tonnes shipped to the EU).
Offers for August rolling from Russia’s NLMK were also heard at the same level – €۳۹۰ per tonne dap border, sources said.
Russia has used 100% of its 80,495-tonne wire rod import quota for the third quarter.
