The steel industry around the world is facing the effects of the Covid 19 virus.

Since last year, declining steel demand this year was predictable due to global economic conditions and trade wars, but the surprise of the Corona virus has pushed the industry slower than expected.

Studies show that the global crisis is more severe than the financial crisis of 2008 and 2009, and this issue will have a significant negative impact on the global steel industry and will greatly reduce the demand for this metal.

Nevertheless, the steel industry will continue to be recognized as the core of a sustainable modern society and form the basis of economic recovery.

Of course, the steel industry has always prioritized the health of its people and employees in recent years. Accordingly, after the epidemic of the virus in the world, many steel units tried to coordinate their activities with these conditions.

*** Crude steel production in the first 6 months of this year

In its latest report, the World Steel Association released crude steel production figures for the sixth month of this year, and according to the report, the world’s total crude steel production as of the first half of this year was 873.1 million tons.

This figure has decreased by about 6% compared to the production statistics in the same period of 2019.

In order to separate these statistics as accurately as possible, it should be said; The share of the Asian region in steel production in the first six months of this year was 642 tons, which is 3% less than the production in the same period last year.

The decline in production in the European Union during the period under discussion is very significant and is equal to 18.7 percent. The union produced 68.3 million tonnes of steel in the first half of this year.

This decline in production in the North American region was also significant; Production in this region was equal to 50 million tons, which is a decrease of 17.6% compared to the production statistics of 2019.

*** ۷% drop in steel in June

According to the report, world crude steel production in June amounted to 148.3 million tons.

Comparing this production statistic with the production of this product in the same period in 2019, it can be seen that the world’s crude steel production has decreased by 7% this month.

Despite the fact that the total steel production in the world was negative this month, but China is one of the countries that in June, its steel production increased by about 4.5 percent compared to the same period in 2019.

The country’s total production this month is 91.6 million tons.

India produced 6.9 million tonnes of steel in June 2020, down 26.3% from June 2019.

Japan produced 5.6 tons of crude steel in June 2020, a 36.3 percent drop from June 2019.

South Korea’s steel production for June 2020 was 5.1 tons, which decreased by 14.3% in June 2020.

Steel production has also declined in Germany, Italy, France, Spain, the United States, CIS countries and Ukraine.

*** A look at production statistics in 2019

The World Steel Association has also published a report on steel production statistics in 2019.

According to the report, the world’s steel production last year was estimated at 1,869 million tons.

The trend of world steel production over the past years is shown in Figure 1. As shown in the chart, the trend of steel production has been upward in recent years.

It should also be noted that the amount of world steel production in 2019 compared to 2018 has increased by about 55 million tons.

In the continuation of this report, we take a look at the performance of the largest steel companies and their production volume. ArcelorMittal is the world’s largest steelmaker.

The company produced 97.3 million tons of steel last year, and Bau China Group is the world’s second largest steelmaker with 95.47 million tons.

Nippon Steel Company also produced more than 51.6 million tons of steel. Undoubtedly, this significant capacity has a significant impact on improving the performance and productivity of these collections.

*** Iran, the 10th largest steelmaker in the world

In the following, we take a look at the situation of steel production in different countries.

China is still by far the world’s largest steel producer. The country produced more than 996 million tons of steel last year. In fact, the country produces more than half of the world’s steel.

It should be noted that the country’s steel production last year, despite all the policies of the country to reduce steel production, continued to increase. India is the world’s second largest steel producer with 111.2 million tonnes.

Of course, some experts believe that India has increased its production capacity far more than this figure in order to achieve the goals of its steel industry, but it has not yet released official statistics.

This means that the country’s production is expected to increase significantly in the coming years. Japan, the United States, Russia, South Korea, Germany, Turkey and Brazil also came in the next ranks of steel production.

The steel industry in Iran has also been considered due to its rich mineral and energy reserves.

Attempts have been made to build significant capacities of this industry in the country. Last year, Iran remained the tenth largest steelmaker in the world.

The country’s steel production in 2019 is reported to be 25.6 million tons. This production has increased by more than one million tons compared to 2018 statistics.

Italy and Taiwan are also in the rankings after Iran and in a relatively short distance from our country Are located

*** Steel production trends in the world

Charts 2 and 3 compare crude steel production in different regions of the world in 2009 and 2019.

Total world steel production in 2009 was reported at 1.239 billion tons. As can be seen, China accounted for 46.6% of world steel production in 2009.

The European Union is the world’s second largest steelmaker, accounting for 11.3 percent of the world’s steel production. The CIS also accounted for 7.9 percent of world steel production.

Japan, NAFTA and India accounted for the largest share of world crude steel production, respectively.

This trend changed slightly in 2019. Nevertheless, China remains the world’s largest steelmaker.

The country’s share of world production increased from 46.6% in 2009 to 53.3% in 2019. The EU’s share of steel production has fallen to 8.5 percent.

The share of Asian countries in steel production increased from 6.8% in 2009 to 7.3% in 2019. India has also been trying to increase its share of world steel production over the years.

The share of Indian steel production in 2019 increased to 6%.

    *** Concluding remarks

World crude steel production has been growing steadily since 2015.

Few people think this growing trend will stop this year. Even with economic problems and trade wars and steel development plans, the declining trend in production was unexpected.

But now, seven months after the start of this year, statistics show a 7% drop in world crude steel production.

As steel is the world’s most strategic metal, this decline in production indicates a significant slowdown in global economic growth.
