Domestic steel rebar prices in Poland remained fairly stable week on week on September 11, while producers considered new hikes for October bookings on steady demand and bullish scrap, sources told Fastmarkets on Friday.
Rebar prices in Poland have stabilized after an increase last week, leaving Fastmarkets’ latest price assessment for steel reinforcing bar (rebar), domestic, exw Poland at 1,920-1,960 zloty ($511-521) per tonne on September 11.
Buying in the domestic market was reportedly “steady” with traded volumes being “healthy,” trading sources said.
Markets sources noted, however, that demand from the construction sector – a key end-use sector – might slow in the long run considering a lack of new projects, which may affect rebar consumption in future.
The problem is that we don’t have enough infrastructure projects, just housing and that is not [going to be] enough,” one buyer said.
Nonetheless, local steelmakers were reportedly planning to implement another price increase for rebar in October, given the rising scrap costs and market expectations of steady buying activity in October, sources said.
The scale of the increase that producers are targeting is about 20-30 zloty per tonne, one source said.
*** Imports
Polish buyers showed little interest in overseas rebar bookings in the week due to both longer lead times and a lack of competitive prices.
Steel rebar for October delivery from suppliers in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) was offered to Poland at €۴۳۰-۴۴۰ ($۵۰۷-۵۱۹) per tonne delivered – equivalent to about €۴۰۵-۴۱۵ per tonne dap border – the same as the week before. The lower end represents offers from Russian mills while the higher end reflects offers from Moldova.
Rebar offers into Poland from Italian suppliers were heard at €۴۴۵-۴۵۰ per tonne delivered but that price, “failed to attract any buying interest from Polish customers,” sources said.
*** Wire rod
Poland’s wire rod market was largely unchanged over the week with domestic prices increasing marginally, sources told Fastmarkets..
Domestic prices for drawing-quality wire rod (s235jr, 6-12mm) in Poland were 1,960-2,000 zloty per tonne delivered in the week to Friday, widening from 1,960-1,980 zloty per tonne last week.
Trading activity in the market was steady, given that most buyers had low inventories and were in need to replenish material, sources said.
“Generally, sales of drawn wire rod are at a normal level – drawing companies are 100% back,” one buyer said.
Market sources believe that current prices will hold until the end of September, and only in October might producers announce new hikes.
It will be the buying activity in the segment that determines the scale of any increase or further price gains, market participants said.
