The region’s output totalled 2.43 million tonnes in the month, compared with 2.66 million tonnes in June 2016, Worldsteel said on Thursday July 20. Iran recorded the highest crude steel output in the region, producing 1.79 million tonnes in June, up by 16.36% from 1.53 million tonnes in the corresponding month last year. Saudi Arabia produced 401,000 tonnes of crude steel in June, down by 20.91% from the 507,000 tonnes output a year earlier. The figure includes the output of state-owned producer Hadeed Sabic, Worldsteel said. Production in the UAE totalled 268,000 tonnes in June, up by 25.82% on an annual basis from 213,000 tonnes in June 2016, while Qatar produced 207,000 tonnes of crude steel last month, a rise of 16.29% from 178,000 tonnes a year earlier. In the frst six months of 2017, Middle East crude steel output totalled 15.49 million tonnes, up by 9.37% from 14.17 million tonnes in the corresponding period of 2016. Iran had the highest crude steel output over the half-year period, with 9.95 million tonnes, a 13.68% increase from 8.75 million tonnes a year earlier. Saudi Arabia produced 2.52 million tonnes of crude steel over the period, down by 5.34% compared with 2016’s 2.66 million tonnes. And crude steel output in the UAE totalled 1.73 million tonnes in January-June, up by 16.59% from 1.45 million tonnes in the frst half of 2016, while Qatar produced 1.30 million tonnes of crude steel over the period, up by 2.04% year-on-year from 1.27 million tonnes.
