In addition, the availability of the semi-fnished product was somewhat reduced as some suppliers were out of the market and waiting for prices to pick up further, while those with capacity to produce both billet and slab opted for billet, because the prices for this product were comparatively higher. Metal Bulletin’s assessment of slab import prices in Southeast Asia and East Asia was $430-435 per tonne cfr for the week ending Monday July 31, against the range of $410-420 per tonne seen last week. A 40,000-tonne cargo of South Korea-origin slab was heard booked early last week by an Indonesian re-roller at $430 per tonne cfr. The shipment is scheduled for September, sources told Metal Bulletin. Earlier in July, the re- roller was said to have booked another cargo of Russia-origin slab for shipment in September at $435 per tonne cfr. However, the volume of this cargo was not immediately clear. Meanwhile, a 10,000-tonne cargo of Indonesian slab was reported sold to a Malaysian re-roller at $445-450 per tonne cfr. Currently, no new offers of Russia-origin slab are being heard in the region. A source on the selling side said that $440-450 per tonne cfr could be workable, however. Brazilian suppliers were also out of the market last week, with mills waiting for the price to reach $420 per tonne fob. The availability of the material in the country was generally low. The estimated cost of freight for a slab cargo of 20,000-30,000 tonnes from Brazil to Indonesia is around $30 per tonne, sources said.
