Iran billet and export prices for steel slab increased again over the week to Wednesday December 30 following deals being secured at even higher prices over the week, Fastmarkets learned.
A total of 110,000 tonnes of Iranian slab was sold in two tenders during the week, sources told Fastmarkets
This comes at a time when Iran’s export billet and slab prices are at their highest since early 2018, when both price assessments began.
Market participants in Iran expect prices to continue increasing because of high raw material prices and a global shortage of semi-finished products.
export duties on rebar and Iran billet***
The rise has become so great that the Russian government is considering introducing export duties on rebar and billet to combat a sharp rise in domestic long steel prices, sources said on December 28.
Furthermore, China announced the removal of its duty on ferrous scrap imports by January 1, 2021, which will result in tighter supply, sources said.
Iran billet exports***
During the week, 30,000 tonnes of Iranian billet was sold at $555 per tonne fob for mid-February shipping, rising from deals heard done at $527-530 per tonne fob last week.

Slab exports***
About 110,000 tonnes of Iranian slab were put out to tender during the week, with 30,000 tonnes of slab sold at $632 per tonne fob for mid-February shipping on December 30 and another 80,000 tonnes of slab sold at $615 per tonne fob earlier in the week.
