The domestic Russian flat steel market District around Moscow was quiet after the break for New Year holidays, but with sentiment remaining upbeat supported by bullish exports, sources told Fastmarkets on Monday January 11.

    *** Russian flat steel , Hot-rolled sheet

Fastmarkets’ weekly price assessment for steel hot-rolled (HR) sheet, domestic, cpt Moscow, Russia, increased on Monday to 60,500-62,000 roubles ($816-837) per tonne including 20% value-added tax, up from 58,000 roubles per tonne in the preceding two assessments.
Immediately before the holidays, Severstal increased its HR sheet price for stockists to 60,500 roubles per tonne cpt Moscow for January. Material from MMK, however, was heard to be available at 62,000 roubles per tonne cpt Moscow.

Traders that have stocking agreements with steel mills receive material into stock without payment and can then buy agreed tonnages from the stocks they hold at any time during a given period, at the price in effect at that time.
Market sources said that, by the end of the current week, these prices will be reconsidered upward, given the sharp uptrend in exports and good buying activity in the secondary market.

    *** Christmas break

“It’s the first day [of normal work] after the New Year-Christmas break, so most mills haven’t announced new prices yet,” one trader said. “We will see how it moves. We expect new increases, considering what’s going on in exports.”
There were public holidays in Russia from January 1 to January 11.
Bullish export market prices and an expected buying increase after the holidays were among the key factors that supported the bullish sentiment in the domestic market, sources said.

Fastmarkets’ weekly price assessment for steel hot-rolled coil, export, fob Black Sea, CIS, was $785-790 per tonne on January 11, up by $30 per tonne from $755-760 per tonne on January 4.
Buying activity for this commodity was also expected to pick up this week.
“There was an artificial material shortage in the market before the holidays because we have been limiting sales while waiting for a clearer market picture, waiting for [the cost of] scrap to settle,” a second trader said.

    *** Russian flat steel , Cold-rolled sheet

Fastmarkets’ weekly price assessment for steel cold-rolled sheet, domestic, cpt Moscow, Russia, increased to 72,000 roubles per tonne, up from 70,000-70,500 roubles per tonne before holidays.
The price for stockists was set at 72,000 roubles per tonne just before the Christmas-New Year break, but sources expected producers to increase prices further by the end of this week.
“There is still a limited supply of CR sheet in the market,” a third trader said. “We tried to book 4,000 tonnes of CR sheet from one producer for January but it was only able to give us 1,000 tonnes.”

*** Russian flat steel , Plate

Fastmarkets’ weekly price assessment for steel plate, domestic, cpt Moscow, Russia, narrowed to 58,000 roubles per tonne on Monday, up from 56,000-58,000 roubles per tonne.
Market participants said that Russian producers had not issued new prices for January yet but were expected to do so later this week.
