Global crude steel output increased by 4.8% year on year to 162.9 million tonnes in January 2021, the World Steel Association (Worldsteel) said on February 26, marking the third monthly consecutive increase.

China recorded the highest crude steel output in January 2021 at 90.2 million tonnes, up by 6.8% year on year from 84.3 million tonnes in 2020, Worldsteel said. The year-on-year increment rate of 6.8% for China followed as a continuous decrease from the growth rate of 12.7% in October 2020.
Other key Asian countries also managed to record a year-on-year increase rate.
India continued to be the world’s second-largest steel producer, with a total of 10 million tonnes in January 2021, rising by 7.6% year on year from 9.3 million tonnes.
South Korea produced 6 million tonnes, increasing by 4.9% year on year, however, the crude steel output in the world’s third-largest steelmaker, Japan, fell by 3.9% year on year to 7.9 million tonnes in January 2021.
*** Europe
Countries in the European Union produced 12.2 million tonnes of crude steel in January 2021, slightly down by 0.4% from 2020. The EU’s largest producer, Germany, reported a crude steel output of 3.3 million tonnes in January, up by 6% annually.
Turkey’s crude steel production for January was 3.4 million tonnes, up by 12.7% against the same period last year.
In the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), steel production rose to 9.2 million tonnes in January 2021, increasing by 4.5% year on year. Comparatively, Russia produced 6.7 million tonnes of steel, rising by 6.5%.
Production in Brazil was 3 million tonnes in January 2021, moving up by 10.8% year on year, while Iran was estimated to have produced 2.6 million tonnes in January 2021, up by 10.2% from 2020, Worldsteel said.
The United States posted the largest decline of crude steel output for January 2020, falling by 9.9% year on year to 6.9 million tonnes.
