China’s crude steel, hot metal and finished steel production all rose sharply year on year in March and the first quarter of 2021, according to data released by National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Friday April 16.
March production ***
Crude steel: 94.02 million tonnes, up by 19.1% from March 2020
Hot metal: 74.75 million tonnes, up by 8.9% year on year
Finished steel: 119.87 million tonnes, up by 20.9% year on year
January-March production ***
Crude steel: 271.04 million tonnes, up by 15.6% year on year
Hot metal: 220.97 million tonnes, up by 8% year on year
Finished steel: 329.40 million tonnes, up by 22.5% year on year
The NBS also released first-quarter data related to major downstream steel industries on Friday.
New construction starts by floor area: 361.63 million square meters, up by 28.2% year on year
Infrastructure investment: up by 29.7% year on year
On April 11, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) released figures on automotive production and sales for the first quarter of 2021.
Production in March: 2.46 million units, up by 71.6% year on year, up by 63.9% from February
Sales in March: 2.53 million units, up by 74.9% year on year, up by 73.6% month on month
Production in January-March: 6.35 million units, up by 81.7% year on year
Sales in January-March: 6.48 million units, up by 75.6% year on year
