In a report, the Iranian Steel Producers Association referred to the evaluation of the steel industry’s performance last year. According to this report, the country’s steel production last year increased by 11% compared to the previous year. This growth has taken place at a time when the largest volume of US economic sanctions has targeted the Iranian steel market. Please stay tuned to Artan Press.
*** Evaluation of Iranian steel production last year
A study of Iran’s steel production statistics shows a growth in production last year. The Iranian Steel Producers Association published a statistical report on the production, export and import and apparent consumption of the country’s steel in the first 10 months of this year. According to published statistics, the country’s middle steel production in the first 10 months of this year was more than 25.3 million tons. Compared to the same period last year, this figure shows an increase of 11 percent, which is higher than the growth rate of steel production in all the top steel-producing countries in the world.
*** A look at the statistics of intermediate steel production in the country
According to statistics provided by the analytical journal Chilan, the country’s average steel production in the first 11 months of 1999 was more than 27.7 million tons. This figure shows an increase of 11% compared to the same period of 1998, and this growth rate is equivalent to about 2.7 million tons more steel produced in the first 11 months of 1999. The growth of intermediate steel production is a great opportunity to prevent the sale of raw materials and remove added value from Iran’s domestic steel supply chain.
*** Take a look at the rebar section in the country’s steel statistics
We start the country’s steel statistics from the rebar sector. Rebar production growth last year was the highest possible among all categories of steel products. This product has recorded a production growth of 17% compared to the same period last year. During the 11 months of 1998, rebar production was estimated at 7400 thousand tons, which in 1999 was estimated at 8700 thousand tons. The growth of rebar production is considered as a key indicator in the growth of construction and civil engineering activities. This could indicate that construction activities have declined less during the Corona.
*** Billet performance last year
But the issue of the country’s steel statistics in the steel billet sector is also worth considering. Steel billet ranked second in production growth last year. This product achieved a 15% increase in production compared to the same period last year. It is necessary to explain that steelmakers produced 27 million and 724 thousand tons of ingots (billets, bloom and slabs) from the beginning of April to the end of February. This figure was 24 million 937 thousand tons in the same period last year.
*** Production growth of long sections in the country’s steel production report
Overall, the analysis of the country’s steel production report last year shows that long sections have performed much better than other steel products. The production of steel products (beams, rebars, studs, corners, sheets, etc.) in the country during the 11 months of this year was 20 million and 211 thousand tons. The production of these products in the country during the same period last year was 18 million and 350 thousand tons. Also, the total production of long sections last year was estimated at 10 million tons. This figure is a very good recession in the history of the country’s steel production.
*** Reducing the export of steel products
The issue that can be assessed from the report of the country’s steel production has been the decrease in exports and the greater tendency to import in steel products. In this regard, according to the report, the export of steel ingots in the country is estimated at 5 million and 600 thousand tons. Other steel products have a performance almost half that of ingots. Other steel products have exported 2 million and 640 thousand tons and this factor is estimated for sponge iron 819 thousand tons. Compared to the same period last year (6 million and 351 thousand tons of ingots, 3 million and 275 thousand tons of steel products and 942 thousand tons of sponge iron), decreased by 12, 19 and 13 percent, respectively.
*** Growth in imports of steel products last year
But in addition to evaluating Iran’s steel record in terms of exports, it is not bad to have a look at the country’s import indicators in the steel sector. In this regard, from the beginning of April to the end of February last year, a figure of 5,000 tons of ingots and 847,000 tons of various steel products have entered the country. This figure has increased by 67% and 90%, respectively, compared to the import figure of the same period last year (3,000 tons of ingots and 445,000 tons of various steel products). Perhaps one of the main reasons for this tendency to import is the rising exchange rate and the cost price of steel production in Iran, which has created a tendency to buy abroad.
