Turkish steel billet prices in local and export markets have increased this week on improving demand, while imported billet prices narrowed downward, market participants said on Thursday June 17.
Turkish market participants were expecting prices to increase for billet because of high scrap prices.
Scrap prices decreased during the week, but the price falls were not sharp.
Fastmarkets’ daily index for steel scrap, HMS 1&2 (80:20 mix), North Europe origin, cfr Turkey, was calculated at $500.26 per tonne on June 17, down from $510.55 per tonne on June 10, but still higher than the calculation of $495.27 per tonne on June 3.
Turkish mills were offering billet at $685-700 and $700-710 per tonne ex-works during the week, compared with offers at $680-700 per tonne ex-works last week.
One deal was heard at $685 per tonne ex-works.

The mills in Turkey increased their offers for exports this week to $685-710 per tonne fob, compared with offers last week at $680-690 per tonne fob. Buyers were bidding $680-690 per tonne fob.

Fastmarkets’ weekly price assessment for steel billet, export, fob main port Turkey, was $685-700 per tonne on June 17, rising from $670-680 per tonne on June 10.
Billet suppliers in the Commonwealth of Independent States offered material to Turkey at $675-690 per tonne cfr during the week, but buyers were bidding $660-665 per tonne cfr.
One deal was heard to the Izmir region around $680 per tonne cfr, according to a source, but this could not be confirmed at the time of publication.
