Russia flat steel continued to increase over the past seven days, supported by a strong export market and good demand, sources told Fastmarkets on Monday April 26.
*** Hot-rolled sheet
Hot-rolled sheet offer prices for May from Severstal were heard at 92,000 roubles ($1,228) per tonne for stockists, the same as last week.
Other key suppliers to the region, Novolipietsk Steel (NLMK) and Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK), have yet to issue firm offers for May.
But one source said that the current purchase prices for NLMK’s coil for stockists was 92,000 roubles per tonne.
Traders that have stocking agreements with steel mills receive material into stock without payment and can then buy agreed tonnages from the stocks they hold at any time during a given period, at the price in effect at that time.
Meanwhile, buyers estimated the “workable” price from mills to be about 90,000-92,000 roubles per tonne.
In the secondary market, HR sheet from large traders was heard offered at 95,000-96,000 roubles per tonne, up from 92,000-94,000 roubles per tonne last week.
But sources noted that trading companies were holding back volumes, expecting prices to rise further.
*** Price assessment for steel hot-rolled sheet
As a result, Fastmarkets’ weekly price assessment for steel hot-rolled sheet, domestic, cpt Moscow, Russia, moved up to 90,000-92,000 roubles per tonne on Monday, including 20% value-added tax, up from 90,000 roubles per tonne last week.
At the same time, several sources said that continued price rises in the export market remained a key driver for domestic increases because producers were pushing for rises domestically to “keep their premium over exports.”
Fastmarkets’ weekly price assessment for steel hot-rolled coil, export, fob Black Sea, CIS, was $980-1,000 per tonne, up by $5-35 per tonne from $945-995 per tonne on April 26. The export price for CIS-origin HRC has been on a steady rise since mid-February.
*** Cold-rolled sheet
Fastmarkets’ weekly price assessment for steel cold-rolled sheet, domestic, cpt Moscow, Russia, remained at 100,000-100,500 roubles per tonne on Monday, the same as a week earlier.
Offers for May CR sheet from Severstal and NLMK were heard in the same price range, sources said.
Ukrainian supplier Metinvest was reported by two sources to have offered June-delivery CR sheet to the region at 132,000 roubles per tonne, but that price was considered “absolutely unworkable” by buyers for now.
Plate offers were scarce to the region. May volumes from key suppliers MMK and Asha Steel were sold out “about two weeks ago” at 80,000 roubles per tonne, while new offers have yet to be announced.
Offer prices of 80,000 roubles per tonne were not included in the assessment because, during the review period, no tonnages were available at that level any more.
One source reported an offer at 87,000 roubles per tonne delivered from United Metallurgical Company (OMK). That was also estimated as the workable level by buyers.
In the secondary market, plate was heard traded at about 94,000 roubles per tonne during the past week.
As a result, Fastmarkets’ weekly price assessment for steel plate, domestic, cpt Moscow, Russia, was 87,000 roubles per tonne on Monday, up from 80,000 roubles per tonne last week.
