The report of the World Steel Association states that the 9-month production of Iran’s steel in 2020 has exceeded more than 9% of its value, which was estimated at 20.8 million tons in the previous year.
Preliminary reports from the World Steel Association on the production situation in the 64 member countries of the association show that Iran was able to produce 20 million and 822 thousand tons of crude steel from the beginning of January this year to the end of September, which is a nine-month period. Last year, with a record 19 million tons per year, it grew by 9.3 percent compared to the same period last year, and in the current situation, despite the sanctions, this growth was not expected to be predictable.
If we look at the global steel production reports as a whole, we find that during this period, world steel production has reached 1.347 billion tons, which is 3.2 percent less than the same period last year. Therefore, the performance of Iranian steel has broken records in a situation where most steel producing countries were in a downward trend. This could be Iran’s strategic power to overcome the oil crisis and political pressures to sell its oil to the world.
*** European steel production in 2020
During the first nine months of this year, EU steel production fell 17.9 percent, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) 2.5 percent, North America 18.2 percent, South America 13.9 percent, Africa 16.1 percent, the Middle East 1.9 percent and the Oceania 2.9 percent. But the growth of Iranian steel production in this situation is estimated at 9%, the main reason being the uninterrupted sales to the Chinese market.
The report estimates that Iran’s crude steel production in September this year reached 2 million 260 thousand tons, which is 2.2 percent less than the same month last year.
During the current month, most parts of the world saw a 14.1 percent drop in steel production, largely due to declining global demand and the closure of factories and industries around the world.
The European Union, 0.3 percent of the Commonwealth of Independent States, 17.4 percent of North America, 14 percent of Africa and 11 percent of the Middle East fell. During this period, steel production in Asia increased by 7.4%. In general, the average growth of member countries of the Association of Steel Producers during the month was 2.9 percent, which owes much of its growth to the production of Iranian crude steel.
*** Twice the growth of Iran’s steel industry
Khodadad Gharibpour, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Imidro, stated that in 1957 the amount of steel production was 380,000 tons and this amount reached 10 million tons in 1984 (the beginning of the pressure of sanctions) and our production capacity is now 40 million tons and our production is 30 million Is the body. Emphasizing that in all periods when Iran was in trade tension, the steel industry has experienced 100% growth, he said: “The growth of the steel industry shows the progress of each country and from this perspective, this statistic is our pride.”
Regarding the role of the steel industry in creating jobs in the country, he acknowledged: “The steel industry has created 200,000 direct jobs in the country, and this year, for the first time, steel production will exceed 30 million tons.” Referring to the effects of inaugurating steel projects, he added: “Creating every job in the steel chain from the beginning of the mining sector to the end of the chain, will lead to the formation of 17 indirect and sustainable jobs.”
The steel industry in Iran is known as a young and emerging industry. Last year, large investments were made in various parts of the steel value chain, both upstream and downstream, and the fruits of these investments will reach their peak by the next decade. The result of these investments to date has made Iran one of the top ten steel producing countries.
*** Iran’s Steel in the headlines of the world’s leading news agencies
Iran Steel has been able to reach the production level of the world’s industrialized countries in the field of steel production in a certain period of time. It has reached the world steel producers’ club. In economic indicators, steel has a very effective role and is another way of excellent income in the best industries of the countries, all steel-dependent industries owe their growth to steel production and this industry is known as a parent industry. All of these cases are the reasons why Iran Steel is in the headlines of the world’s leading news agencies, and experts look at the reports of Iran Steel’s output from different perspectives and examine the situation in Iran.
In the current situation, sanctions have had the least impact on the steel industry, while there are enough raw materials and we have no problem with the subject, quantity and quality of raw materials. The prospect of global growth in Iranian steel will continue to be strong.
*** Effects of supply of steel products in the stock market
If all steel products are listed on the stock exchange, in addition to using the private sector investment capacity, many problems will be avoided. There are units that do not offer steel on the stock exchange, and this has caused the upstream mineral industry to not reach sufficient maturity in this field, so this issue must be rooted out and a solution must be found immediately to solve this problem. As Iran’s steel production continues to grow, many of the country’s economic risks will be eliminated. Therefore, this issue should be at the top of the priorities of steel policymakers.
Iran’s steel industry, despite its growing growth, is far from the horizon of the steel industry in 1404. One of the most important ways for the steel industry to grow is to offer all parts of the steel supply chain on the stock exchange and over-the-counter. The growth of steel in the current situation should not cause us to forget the weaknesses of this industry. The most important scourge of the Iranian steel industry these days is the sale of raw materials, which wastes a large part of national capital, and the second issue is the cost price of steel is in Iran that we have struggled due to the lack of up-to-date technologies in the field of steelmaking.
Both challenges are not issues that cannot be solved. Therefore, it is better to take measures to compensate for the shortcomings of this industry in the conditions when Iranian steel is in its best days, so that we can witness the continuation of production growth and investment in this strategic industry.
