Domestic prices for steel rebar in Poland have narrowed over the past week, supported by good demand from end-users, sources told Fastmarkets on Friday August 7.
*** Rebar in Poland market
Rebar in Poland market remained good in the week, despite the normal seasonal summer slowdown. “Construction [activity] is slightly slower due to seasonal factors, but it is still okay,” one trader said. “I do not see less activity, and demand and production are at normal levels,” one mill source said. “We have good order books – in fact, even better than last year.”
Fastmarkets’ weekly price assessment for steel reinforcing bar (rebar), domestic, ex-works Poland, was 1,900-1,940 zloty ($511-522) per tonne on Friday, narrowing from 1,840-1,950 zloty last week. The assessment was based on deals and offers heard in the market.
In the secondary market, steel rebar was heard traded at 1,940-1,980 zloty per tonne delivered, up from 1,920-1,940 zloty per tonne last week, sources said. Several sources told Fastmarkets that no Polish rebar producers, except for Cognor, plan to have maintenance stoppages in August.
“Cognor will stop in mid-August. ArcelorMittal wants to halve production in September and take a maintenance stop in October,” one distributor said.
*** Imports
Polish buyers have resumed their bookings of imported rebar in the past week. A sale of a small tonnage of rebar from Moldova to Poland was heard at €۴۲۵ ($۵۰۴) per tonne cpt (equivalent to about €۴۰۰ per tonne dap) earlier this week. And a deal for rebar with October delivery from Belarus was reported at €۴۰۰ per tonne dap border earlier in the assessment week. The tonnage involved was not disclosed. Other European rebar suppliers were quiet this week and no fresh offers to Poland have been reported. “The holiday period is approaching. Italy will be out for about 2-3 weeks, and [material from] Germany is too expensive now,” a second trader said.
*** Wire rod
Domestic prices in Poland for drawing-quality wire rod (s235jr, 6-12mm) were heard at 1,940-1,950 zloty per tonne delivered, narrowing from 1,900-1,980 zloty per tonne last week, sources said.
Buying activity in the wire rod market was also good over the past week, with most companies still working at about 80-90% capacity, according to local sources. But no fresh wire rod offers from CIS suppliers to Poland were reported by buyers.
